D & M Subs was established in 1984 by Dick Liebel and Mark Hackleman. Both men were permanently laid off from the former P&H Cranes plant in Escanaba. Not wanting to leave the area, they decided to open a sub sandwich restaurant in Gladstone. In February of 1984, D&M Subs was opened.
Dick and Mark operated the business together for fifteen months. When Dick decided to pursue other interests, Mark purchased his share of the business. Mark and his wife Debbie owned and operated the Gladstone store, and opened a new store in Escanaba in 1994. When Debbie and Mark retired in 2003, they sold the business to their sons, Steve and Dan Hackelman. It was then sold to Erik and Diane Johnson who owned and operated the business for more than 10 years. Recently in October of 2020 the business was sold to me, Dan LaCarte. I have been blessed with continued success, thank you for your support. |
